The Shaman’s Hand is a powerful symbol of the Hopi tribe, native to Arizona. “Hopi” means one who is peaceful, civilised and well mannered. The Hopi concept was deeply rooted in the everyday life of the tribe, they were peaceful people who worked the land with care and respect for all others.
The Shaman’s hand is made up of the hand and the spiral. The hand was a symbol used by many Native American tribes to symbolises life energy, the presence of life.
They would paint their hand and then imprint it on cave walls, their homes, etc. as a way to mark their presence.
The spiral depicted forming from the centre of the palm represented several things to the Hopi people, it was the mark of the Great Spirit, the all seeing spirit, the rising sun, and also an emblem of growth and transformation.
When the hand and spiral were combined to form the Shaman’s Hand it represented great strength, healing, power, renewal and protection.
