Goddess Durga is one of the female energies of the Supreme Absolute who is known as Devi, Shakti, the unconquerable force. She is considered as the purest root cause of creation, maintenance, and destruction. In Hinduism, the goddess Durga, also known as Shakti or Devi, is the protective mother of the universe. She is one of the faith's most popular deities, a protector of all that is good and harmonious in the world. Sitting astride a lion or tiger, the multi-limbed Durga battles the forces of evil in the world. Durga is frequently depicted standing atop or riding a tiger or lion, which represents power, will, and determination. As Sati, the beloved daughter of King Daksha and Queen Menaka she gives up a kingdom and earns her father's wrath. As Kali, she turns black as the night and omnipotent, terrible in rage and fury, with just a string of skulls as her garland and her only garb. As Parvati, she is serene, the pretty consort of Lord Shiva by his side in the snowy peaks of the Kailash Mountain. She is Bhawani, a symbol of life. She is Sati, the object of death. She is Basanti, the herald of springtime. She is also Amba, Jagadhatri, Tara, Ambika, Annapurna. Mosty Durga is depicted as riding on a lion or tiger. A tiger symbolizes unlimited power, and so her riding one indicates that she possesses unlimited power. The lion is a symbol of uncontrolled animalistic tendencies (such as anger, arrogance, selfishness, greed, jealousy, desire to harm others, etc.). Her sitting on a lion reminds us to control these qualities so that we are not controlled by them. The lion represents power, will, and determination.
